The DC Bluegrass Union is a strong and growing organization dedicated to promoting bluegrass music in the Washington, DC area, which includes the heavily populated Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland regions. They are hosting their first festival on March 27 at Langley High School in McLean, VA.They hope to see this festival become a larger, annual event that will help restore the prominence that The District and its environs once enjoyed in bluegrass lore. After all, it was from this area that Bluegrass Unlimited, The Country Gentlemen, Seldom Scene and The Johnson Mountain Boys emerged. Not to mention bluegrass radio on WAMU, which has grown now into the 24/7 online station, Bluegrass Country.

Bluegrass legend Curly Seckler began his musical career in 1935, over WSTP radio in Salisbury, NC. He went on to perform with a number of the top names in bluegrass music, including Charlie Monroe, Jim & Jesse, Mac Wiseman, The Stanley Brothers, and The Sauceman Brothers. In 1949 he joined Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs’ Foggy Mountain Boys, and remained with them for nearly a dozen years, recording over 130 songs with them. For readers unfamiliar with this musical genre, bluegrass music is the sound produced with particular acoustic stringed instruments like the Mandolin and the Debro. To understand bluegrass music is to realize and appreciate its musical roots. Bluegrass is an original American music formed from a number of varied influences including the early Old Time ballads, fiddle tunes and string band music with its proven roots to the homeland musical heritage of the immigrants who pioneered America.

Classic Bluegrass, Vol. 2 $7.19Classic Bluegrass, Vol. 2 Share and Enjoy: Bluegrass, Classic, Vol. One Response to “Classic Bluegrass, Vol. 2” 1. Bomojaz says: March 7, 2010 at 3:42 pm More great bluegrass selections culled from the massive Smithsonian-Folkways catalog. Famous performers Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, The Country Gentlemen, not so famous performers The Georgia Pals, Half and Half, classic oldies THE GIRL BEHIND THE BAR, ROVING GAMBLER, FOGGY MOUNTAIN TOP, newer originals CAROLINA IN THE PINES, MISS FERRIS are all included. Doc Watson sings and plays a beautiful rendition of SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD, David and Billy Rae Johnson perform a hypnotic BLUE GRASS BREAKDOWN, and Eric Weissberg does an instrumental version of JESSE JAMES – all major highlights here for me. Bluegrass fans will be ecstatic with this release the same can be said for Volume 1, and at this great price, it would be insane to pass it up. Highly recommended.
